Santa Anita has been the place for chaos

For the moment, the Great Race Place isn't great. Santa Anita is having the winter of its discontent.

Traditionally, the thoroughbred horse race meeting that begins the day after Christmas, at the track at the foot of the scenic snow-topped San Gabriel Mountains, has the most expensive horses in the country and the best jockeys to ride them in an annual showcase for the sport.

Age-old debate solution

We live in an age where those in power trot out deductive reasoning as bastions of extremes, such as conservative and liberal, further confusing and enslaving the masses. The battle between creationism and evolution has always been troubling to me, perhaps because of the absolute implications of both philosophies. May I propose a more politically correct term for the two warring factions with a new term, Inductive Selection?

I use the word "inductive" in the sense of something that is initiated, rather then something that usually happens by accident, which would be the case when using deductive reasoning to explain either creationism or evolution.

In the same sense, my use of the word "selection" deludes the randomization factor, adding an element of possible intelligence that is lacking in evolution.

Carson vs. Elrod

As candidates go, they couldn't be more unlike. Democrat Andre Carson and Republican Jon Elrod are vying for the 7th Congressional District seat that represents most of Marion County. But the few other things they share in common -- both are young, have little experience in public office and come from political families -- pale in comparison with the vast differences in almost every other facet of their lives. Voters will choose one of them to fill the vacancy created by the death of Julia Carson, Andre's grandmother, during a special election March 11. Here is a look at them based on interviews with each candidate. .

Dinner and dance benefit victim's sons

The friends and family of Erick Shepheard will host a chicken and beer dance Saturday night at Bel-Air Bowl in Belleville to benefit the slain man's two young sons.

Shepeard was found shot to death Jan. 2 in his burned-out home in rural Freeburg. His wife, Cindy, was charged with first-degree murder three days later.

Admission to the benefit will include a chicken dinner, draft beer and dancing to Boulderdash along with 50-50 drawings and a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit Shepheard's two sons, who are now living with his family's relatives; one boy recently turned 7 while the other will celebrate his 1st birthday on Feb. 19.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 and dancing from 8 to midnight. Tickets are $20 each in advance and $25 at the door.

Leopard unveiling expected at Apple confab

A few things are expected from most Apple watchers: a preview of the latest version of Mac OS X, which Apple itself said would be coming, and new hardware based on Intel's Core 2 Duo chips. Apple has yet to take its Power Mac desktop to the Intel processors, and it's expected to unveil those powerful systems.

Apple has not said much about Leopard, the next-generation release of Mac OS X. The company announced the name at last year's confab and said then that it would be available late this year or early next year.

Apple has been on a fairly rapid release cycle, producing four updates to Mac OS X since 2001. In that time, Microsoft has released just one major version of Windows Windows XP, though the company did come out with its Tablet and Media Center flavours as well as the security-oriented Service Pack 2.
