Mercedes-Benz to introduce sportier premium roadster

The roadster features a new design with the emphasis firmly on sportiness and effortless driving.

'These traits are also reflected in the handling qualities of the two-seater model, which now delivers even more athletic performance thanks to the new direct-steer system as well as offering enhanced comfort and safety,'

said Frank Bernthaler, Director, Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Cars, Middle East and Levant. The new SL range will also feature two six-cylinder models starting with the new entry-level SL 280 (231 hp) and the SL 350 as well as the familiar SL 500 with a V8 engine and the top-of-the-range SL 600 with a V12 powerplant. The popular SL 350 is powered by a newly developed, extremely high-revving sports engine boasting an impressive output of 316 hp yet returns a fuel consumption figure that is 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres lower than that of its predecessor (NEDC).

Ivan M4ST4 Èupiæ

In case of the I Am Legend movie, my pessimistic prognosis did not come true, at least not fully. It is the end of the world in the near future, caused by a human-made virus that turns the human population into bloodthirsty beasts of darkness. It is a story that should, by all market rules, be an exaggerated charade of action with moderate attempts to make it more realistic than it is. In a not so long ago past, people like Ridley Scott and Arnold Schwarzenegger were connected with the project, but a budget of $100 million was more than they could chew at the time. Charlton Heston once played the last man alive on the planet in The Omega Man (where he fought vampires), but the modern version that recently pocketed a lot of bank notes in the Warner Bros cash register was not very promising.

Notes: Franchitti takes full advantage of test sessions

The last time Dario Franchitti wheeled around California Speedway, it was from the vantage point of an open-wheel cockpit in 2005.

Having spent the past two days acclimating both to his new Sprint Cup Series car and a heretofore familiar track, Franchitti was anticipating a quiet Saturday morning.

AV giants target eBay software fraud

Two of the world's largest antivirus software vendors are launching legal action against a group of software pirates selling illegal versions of well-known security software on eBay, as part of a major crackdown on software fraud on the auction site.

The trade in illegal software on eBay is a booming industry and one the auction site has been reluctant to address, saying it is the role of the vendors to protect their intellectual property.

Now McAfee and Symantec have decided to get tough on the pirates, throwing their considerable weight behind a Software and Information Industry Association (Siaa) campaign to clean up eBay. The Siaa is planning to ensnare criminals by buying software from eBay and suing those whose products turn out to be illegal.

The initiative was kicked off with the announcement of legal proceedings against five US-based individuals who face claims for damages as well as court orders restricting them from committing their alleged crimes in the future.

Is Obama Really the Liberal Reagan?

2) Yes, Obama wants to raise payroll taxes. But he's actually a bit of a maverick in this since it's the semiofficial Democratic line that Social Security is not really in crisis.

3) Ultimately, I think it might boil down to how big a congressional majority Obama would have to work with—and to pressure him—and what kind of person he is. If there's a Democratic landslide in November, would Obama use that electoral edge to push through all those huge tax increase and spending proposals without any GOP votes—as Clinton did with his tax hikes in 1993? Or would he attempt to compromise?

4) President Obama would come into office facing a $400 billion budget deficit and the prospect of huge future deficits because of Social Security and Medicare. I think that factor alone may turn Obama into an incrementalist on domestic policy, perhaps even fighting his own party to keep down spending, as did Jimmy Carter.

Gulf News readers come to the aid of Australian rider whose bike went ...

Dubai: An Australian rider whose world tour came to a halt after his bike allegedly went missing in Ajman has been offered a helping hand from a number of Gulf News readers, one of whom has offered to donate his own bike. Allan Roberts’ motorbike went missing on Friday in Ajman as he was on the UAE leg of a world tour that had taken him 65,000 kilometres in 37 countries over three continents. His next stop was going to be Iran, following which he was planning to ride all the way to Australia. Eric Pereira, a Dubai based businessman, said he decided to donate his Honda Africa Twin XRV 650 to Allan Roberts after reading Roberts’ story. Roberts owned an XRV 750. .

Memorial service set for Yorba Linda motorcyclist

A memorial service will be held Friday for the 41-year-old motorcyclist who died from injuries suffered during a hit-and-run traffic crash Sunday.

The service for Graham Green of Yorba Linda will be held at 6 p.m. at Memory Garden Memorial Park, 455 W Central Ave., in Brea.

Green was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana at 1:30 a.m. Monday, said Sgt. Dan Adams of the Orange Police Department.

Green, who was a drummer for the Southland blues band Bourbon Road, would have turned 42 years old on Thanksgiving Day.

"This was such a shock to everyone," said band member Joe McGaha. "Graham was a great friend and he definitely will be missed by anyone who came into contact with him."

A benefit concert for Green's family will be held at 7 p.m.

Cars and curries: Salmond in ‘brotherhood of naan’

The failure of the First Minister's diet plans is laid horribly bare in the latest information disclosure which shows him taking limousines several times a day, and regularly to his favourite curry house, the Raj restaurant in Edinburgh.

A spokesman for Mr Salmond admitted he was "a big fan of the brotherhood of naan" but insisted car use was no higher under the current administration than the last.

In his first six months in office, Mr Salmond used government limousines around 1700 times, and every journey is detailed in the latest official disclosure from the government.
